Go for a walk outside

It’s time to lace up your shoes for this week’s challenge!

Walking out in nature is a great way to appreciate the remaining warm weather before it's gone. (Sorry for bringing up colder temperatures so soon!)

Going for a nature walk also has huge benefits for your mind and body, like reducing stress, building strength and improving focus. If you walk near where you are, it also helps reduce carbon emissions compared to driving. It's good for you and good for the earth, too!

Whether you're planning to walk alone or with friends or family, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Prep your gear

  • You don't need much to walk or hike, but it's a good idea to wear suitable clothing for the weather and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.
  • If you're short on any of those items, check out your local MCC Thrift shop. Many shops carry gently used athletic wear and reusable water bottles.

Take notice of the nature around you

  • Visit your local library to learn more about the plants and animals near you. You can create a checklist and try to find as many local species as possible on your walk.

Hike with kindness

  • Make sure to properly dispose of any waste. A runaway granola bar wrapper might not seem like a big deal, but human food can make animals sick and the plastic in the wrapper takes forever to decompose.
  • Stay on the designated path. If you wander, you might damage vulnerable plants.

Enjoy your walk!
