When the holidays arrive, MCC Thrift Lethbridge in Alberta turns extra festive with its dedicated Christmas shop, a tradition that began in 2022 when the team transformed unused space into a seasonal wonderland. With generous holiday donations and a creative vision, the shop has become an exciting place to visit during the holidays.
The variety is incredible: Christmas trees, lights, nativity sets, linens, dishes, décor, music, books, cards, toys, wrapping supplies, clothing, candles and even vintage collectibles. Whether you’re decorating or gift-hunting, there’s something for everyone.
Since it opened, the shop has grown in quality and efficiency. Volunteer Coordinator, Jenna Foster and Retail Manager Lana Takla gave some more insight. “We’ve gotten better at pricing, and the quality of donations is very good,” Jenna and Lana share. Volunteers also now staff the shop 90% of the time, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for shoppers.
Getting this shop ready is truly a year-round labor of love. Dedicated volunteers sort, repair and price donations throughout the year, storing them until setup time. When October arrives, Lana leads the transformation with volunteer help. This year, the shop opened on October 28 and anticipation was high. “We had several calls from customers weeks before asking when we’d open,” says Lana.
Shopping secondhand for Christmas isn’t just budget-friendly, it’s meaningful. “Every purchase contributes to the mission and vision of MCC,” Jenna explains. “Every purchase is a gift to the world.” Your holiday shopping helps support MCC’s projects locally and globally, turning each thrifted treasure into an act of generosity that helps people in need around the world.
With a laugh, Lana sums up what she hopes people take away, “Everything.” Jenna also adds that she hopes people understand the impact that shopping at MCC Thrift makes locally and globally. It’s a reminder that every ornament, every strand of lights, every thrifted Christmas decoration helps write a bigger story of hope and community at home and around the world.
