Kitchen herb garden

Are you ready for your first Sustainable Summer Challenge?

Let’s kick this week’s challenge off with a project you can keep going all year long (if you want to): a sustainable kitchen herb garden. Enjoy deliciously flavorful meals with your family of choice with the herbs you grow!

I bay-leaf that you can do this challenge (insert groan here).

Here are a few basic steps to get your herb garden growing. And feel free to start with just one or two plants or go big and plant a whole multitude of herbs. Whatever you have the time and capacity for is perfect.

  1. Choose your herbs. Pick plants that you and your family of choice love to cook with that work with the space you have. Basil, oregano, mint, chives, sage, rosemary and thyme are some of the easier herbs to grow indoors.
  2. Gather your supplies including seeds, soil (vegetable garden soil will do), watering can, water and pots. Use pots or containers you already have. Or head to your local MCC Thrift shop and find containers that match your decor. Just make sure to put drainage holes in the bottom of your pots and use a drip tray.
  3. Find a sunny spot in your home for your plants to live. A windowsill is a great location.
  4. Fill up your pots with soil and plant your seeds, making sure the soil is moist.
  5. Keep watering your herbs according to the moisture level they each need and watch them grow.
