If you don’t have a summer holiday already planned, try a staycation this weekend!
What is a staycation (you may be asking)? Great question! It’s a vacation spent close to home, checking out local attractions. With climate change being a pressing and real concern, opting for a staycation can be a small but meaningful way to reduce your carbon footprint.
Here are a few ideas for your staycation:
- Have a camping trip in your backyard. Set up your camping gear just steps away from where you store it and keep all the (plumbing) conveniences of home. Enjoy eating outside and an evening campfire, indulging in gooey s’mores. Don’t have camping gear? Consider borrowing camping equipment from your friends and family.
- Become a tourist in your own town. Visit local museums, historical spots, nature parks, public art displays art galleries, gardens or that new restaurant you’ve been meaning to try and more.
- Bring a vacation destination to your home. Why not bring elements of your favorite destination to your home for the weekend?
Here are a few ideas to inspire you:
- Hawaiian theme – Have a Hawaiian pizza (let the pineapple controversy commence!), wear leis and learn how to hula dance. You can even set up a slip-and-slide or water balloon fight to beat the heat.
- Disney theme – Pick your favorite Disney movie to set the theme. Love The Little Mermaid? Spend a day at the beach flipping around in the water and sunbathing on a rock! Or do a Lion King theme day and visit your local zoo and end the day with an outdoor viewing of the movie.
Whatever staycation you choose, pat yourself on the back for creating a fun weekend with your loved ones while reducing your carbon emissions.
