Have a sustainable picnic

Only one thing can make my favourite summertime treat even better — watermelon.

It’s already delicious, but somehow it’s even more enjoyable when I’m lounging on a blanket under the warm summer sun.

That’s right, it’s time for a picnic!

Throughout history, the traditional picnic menu has varied, but a few things have stayed the same. Every picnic needs good food, friendly company and the great outdoors.

For your challenge this week, we’re putting a sustainable twist on a classic picnic. Here are a few suggestions for you to try.

Plan a sustainable menu

  • Picnics offer a great way to whip up a tasty meal while also reducing food waste. “Shop” your pantry or fridge for any odds and ends and see what you can make to use up your leftovers. It’s amazing how appealing leftover veggies become when you chop them up nicely and call it charcuterie.

Pack your picnic

  • Reusable containers are your friend! They make packing food easy and sustainable — no single-use plastic here. If you’re short on containers, check out your local MCC Thrift shop for an ever-changing selection.

Choose conscientious travel

  • A picnic doesn’t have to mean a long time in the car or huge emissions. Is there a pretty spot within walking distance? Or maybe a park you can reach by bike or public transportation?

Clean up

  • Once you’re done with your picnic, make sure everything goes where it belongs. Bring leftovers home to eat another time, recycle and compost food scraps if you can.

Sounds like you have a wonderful outing ahead of you! Will you save me a seat? 😉
